In some video games they have an “adjust your brightness until you can’t see this” type of setting. Is there anything like that I can use to try to optimize my television set settings?

There are home-theater DVDs you can buy. I like the one from “Video Essentials”, it is considered one of the best.http://www.videoessentials.com/ for about $20 (Consumer version).
Search also your home DVDs (or your local video store) for the “THX Optimizer” Logo. THX Optimizer is included for free in many DVDs, like “Finding Nemo (2-disk edition), and provides all you need to adjust brightness and contrast.
